Frequency Modulation Chess
An interactive ambient music instrument where each move and relationships between pieces affect modulation parameters. The rule set is structured so that decent into noise is difficult while harmonic possibilities are endless.
Overview
FM Chess converts a chess game into a continuously evolving harmonic structure.
Three layers interact:
- Board geometry - pitch
- Piece identity - primary modulation
- Board position - secondary modulation (“field influence”)
As pieces move across the board, they generate tones whose spectral complexity reflects the spatial relationships of the position.
The result is a slowly evolving harmonic ecosystem that tends toward increasing purity as pieces are removed from the board.
In addition to creating an original composition whilst playing a chess match, participants can listen to a musical interpretation of notable matches that have been recorded.
